Old Stump's Gnarl

This subject was found in an artist's yard where my nature art group went for plein air painting. I was drawn to the shapes and intricacy of this natural decaying growth. The way the bark curls and the pale colors that result from weather are most interesting visually. Watercolor is the ideal medium to convey the delicate shades of blues, tans, rose. I paint in glaze upon dry glaze to reach the perceived colors. A 3 inch mat and narrow gold tone frame are included in the measurements.
