About the work

Here is a portrait of the almost unknown U.S. Midwest heroine of the crusades for racial justice, Ida Bell Wells. Born in the Mississippi, she made her way north, and spent the last half of her life in Chicago, where I am familiar with her name. In the painting she is shown with Maurine Moss, a child of Thomas Moss who was lynched in Memphis when Ida lived there. Maurine was Ida's Godchild, as Maurine's parents, Thomas and Betty Moss were good friends of Ida. On the painting are 5 strips of text - one a quote, and others short statements of a few of her many efforts to eliminate racial injustice, particularly lynching. Ida enjoyed pretty dresses and is shown in a lace dress that she liked so much. The painting will have a contemporary hanging, with all 4 edges painted. The price includes the wrapping and shipping. This cost might be reduced if the shipping is within the U.S. or near my home in the U.S.. #IdaBWells #RacialJustice #IdaInChicago #IdaWells #Lynching
