The imagery of much of Wes Magyar's work revolves around the figure. He finds the figure, especially the face, an endlessly inspiring basis for both his formal and conceptual ideas. His work explores various personal and social issues, ranging from family to politics. Recently, his artistic project focused on the myth of the individual and our contradictory dependence on each other, both personally and on a macro level. As our symbiosis with technology evolves, some gaps between individuals, communities, and cultures become less clear and less meaningful. As the individual becomes more global, the impact of our actions also increases. At the moment the façade of the individual begins to crumble, we cling to the ideal that the individual can be self-made and self-sustaining. His paintings, in their own way, attempt to critique this idea.
