Magosja Turkawski
About Magosja Turkawski
Magosja is a visual artist. She illustrates, designs, and paints. She graduated in 1990 from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Her work includes both portraits and abstract paintings.
At seventeen, she went to the AKI in Enschede and the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. She began her career as a designer and art director at well-known Dutch lifestyle magazines. Since 2015, she has been working full-time as a painter. Her paintings are inspired by the "Soak-Stain Technique" of the American artist Helen Frankenthaler. In this technique, the diluted oil or acrylic paint is poured over the canvas. Because the paint is so heavily diluted, it takes on more of the consistency of watercolor and is fully absorbed by the canvas. As a result, the paint becomes merely color and loses its material aspect.
