As a born and raised Betuwean, I was quickly drawn to the beauty of the landscape. In my youth, I did not see the outer beauty; it was just part of it. Grass was grass, and a tree was for climbing. It was mainly the enormous playground where I could entertain myself after school. A utility object, then. Wandering through the swampy clay, searching for duck eggs, fishing, swimming in the Kil at Ophemert. It couldn't get any better, and it would always stay that way... Later, after my education at the art academy, the appreciation for the beauty of the landscape came.
