Van Gogh Painting from the U.S. Available for Purchase at Tefaf Maastricht
Selling at this year's major annual art and antique fair, Tefaf in Maastricht, is Vincent van Gogh's painting titled 'Head of an Old Farmer with White Cap.' The canvas measures 63 by 48 centimeters and is rendered in oil paint. Painted around 1884 during Van Gogh's residence in Nuenen, it originates from the same period as his world-renowned artwork 'The Potato Eaters.' During his time in Nuenen (December 1883 to November 1885), Van Gogh frequently portrayed people from rural life. The painting is presented for sale by the American gallery M.S. Rau from New Orleans, with the asking price undisclosed.
The gallery praises Van Gogh's talent for capturing both the resemblance and character of his subjects, noting, 'With thick, decisive brushstrokes, he captures the confident gaze of the woman,' as stated in the accompanying text.
Tefaf, organized by The European Fine Art Foundation, is open to the public from March 9 to 14. Over 270 gallery owners and antique dealers from approximately 22 countries showcase a diverse range, spanning from antiquity to contemporary art, including paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and photographs.
A new addition this year is Tefaf Focus, a section of the fair designed to delve deeper into the work of individual artists or concepts. The organization aims to prompt visitors to consider the possibilities of connecting various art forms.
