At Online Gallery, we love to spotlight artists who push boundaries and invite audiences to marvel at their work. Today, we turn our attention to Ster Borgman, a versatile artist who uniquely combines science, magic, and art. With a fascination for natural processes, pigments, and materials like glass and rust, Borgman creates artworks that take the viewer on a journey through deep time and transformation.

The Magic of Greenhouse

One of Borgman’s most impressive projects is undoubtedly Greenhouse. Inspired by their childhood in the greenhouse region of Aalsmeer, this work combines glass and rust to create a visual and conceptual narrative. The project is not only an ode to the transience and resilience of nature but also a critique of Western science's rigid structures.

Borgman built a greenhouse from recycled glass and authentic wooden frames, making the "overgrowing" quality of rust visible. Rust, often seen as a static and slow process, takes on an active, almost lively role in their work. Using pigments made from rust, Borgman fuses glass plates in an 800˚C kiln. During this process, the rust changes color—from black to fiery shades of red—telling a story of transformation, time, and the cyclical nature of materials.

The glass plates act as "still images" in a prolonged process. But as Borgman himself describes, these plates could break after years or even centuries, returning to sand and releasing the rust to begin the process anew. This poetic layering invites reflection on time and impermanence.

Where Science Meets Magic

Borgman describes himself as a "magical scientist," and this is beautifully reflected in their work. He balances on the edge of science and magic, embracing the unknown and leaving room for wonder. His art critiques the often strict separations within science—such as those between gender, particles, and chemical processes. Instead, Borgman seeks fluidity and connection, as seen in the dripping of glass, the leaking of rust, and the sensual colors of flowers and plants.

Beyond Greenhouse

In addition to Greenhouse, Borgman’s portfolio includes a range of projects that highlight their versatility as an artist. From using natural pigments and creating surreal objects like a pentagonal beehive to exploring the relationship between humans and nature, each piece showcases their unique artistic vision.
