About the work
In Au Fil de l'Histoire, the artist immerses us in a universe where time and memory weave around books and their stories. Through the use of oil on canvas and knife strokes, the work creates a dense and palpable texture that gives a great materiality to the representation of books, symbols of the narratives and knowledge accumulated over time. This work is part of the series of libraries by Sophie Dumont.
The choice of colors, ranging from beige to dark tones, creates a subtle and soothing contrast, evoking a sense of depth and calm. Each book, although reduced to its edge, seems to carry within it a promise of an unfinished story. The books overlap in an ordered but not rigid composition, like a continuous flow that defies the passage of time and the lines between order and chaos.
The very craftsmanship of the canvas, the way the materials stack and merge, seems to describe the transmission of knowledge through the ages. This meticulous work invites contemplation and reflection on what lies behind each cover, each page, each line of writing. The choice of a format of 73 x 60 cm, both intimate and present, serves to capture the viewer's attention, inviting them to immerse themselves in the artist's universe.
With Au Fil de l'Histoire, the artist offers not only a visual exploration of abstraction and matter but also a meditation on collective memory and shared narratives, encapsulated in the book object. Each brushstroke seems to be a line drawn in history, a work in itself that is part of the long tradition of art as a witness of time.
