In 1983 the St. Galler Abbey Church, the Abbey Library ("Stiftsbibliothek") and the associated monastery buildings, were referred to simply as "St. Galler Stiftsbezirk ", declared a" UNESCO World Heritage Site ". The richly decorated Baroque complex, which is known far beyond Switzerland's borders, has its origins in a small settlement founded by the monk Gallus in 612 in “the green wilderness between Lake Constance and Säntis”.
