About the work
In this painting a young sailor carries a rowing boat on his back through a landscape populated by strange creatures, some of whom look on in curiosity, whilst others appear to be quite malevolent. The sailor looks anxious and appears to be hiding behind the upturned boat on his back - using it as if it is a shield against the intrusive and inquisitive attentions of these outlandish beasts. I see the boat or ship as a symbol of the self or the body in which the self resides. It is the vessel in which we travel through life, negotiating it as best we can. But its natural habitat is water - this is where the boat is built to be. In this image the sailor carries his boat, perhaps between oceans, encountering the creatures of the land. In my eyes, this picture represents the versatility, adaptability and durability of the individual, no matter what he or she encounters. It is an image of personal strength in spite of fear of the unknown and of real or imagined threats.
