About Mark Van Eygen
Bright colors to capture the light, sensitive lines to represent the sensual shapes of a beautiful body, special wood with grains that draw the figure trapped in the trunk…
With acrylic paint on canvas and pastel on paper, I try to convey an atmosphere in my paintings and drawings, hopefully warm and vibrant.
Chainsaw, grinding discs, sanders, and chisels I make sculptures of people, birds, fish, bananas, or something in between from wood logs. The wood forces me to adapt, to abstract, to deform to get even closer to the core, both the core of the wood and the core of the idea.
Simple, understandable art. Over the years I have become more 'materialistic'. The strongest pastel chalk, strong acrylic paint, sometimes homemade paint, always with the best pigments and mediums.
Cherry, walnut, apple, pear: types of wood with a mesmerizing grain pattern. Sometimes smooth sanded, then rough with visible saw teeth and chisel marks.
You will receive images of images. Know then that you hopefully get a beautiful idea, but never as complete as in the flesh.
Curious? Feel free to get in touch.
If you do not trust the matter: if it reassures you, I have taken lessons at the academy of Mortsel with Ferre Van Gijsel, Peter Van Tongerloo, with great help and tips from then-director Bob Stikkers. Also briefly at the academy of Lier for sculpting, but it remains important to find your own style and path. I continue to seek that. Those who find too early have searched poorly.
