At Doel - In a State of Urban Solitude
About the work
At Doel - In a State of Urban Solitude shows the empty, desolate 'dynamics' of a place called Doel. A small town that's about to be swallowed by the Port of Antwerp and the other neighbour, a massive nuclear power plant. Most people already left and gave away their habitat. They handed it over to the new reality: massive container cranes and bulk carriers. The industry is taking over and people find their way around somewhere else. Fascinating movements of a modern landscape, constantly scraping at the boundaries of existence. Only one light, maybe the last one is burning. Waiting to be switched off. Or maybe not?
First I made my underpainting in acrylic and Gesso. This to create a perfect, solid texture for the following layers. Then I started working on multiple layers of a combination of thick and thin traits of acrylic and a bit of spray paint. Then finished with a slightly glossy varnish.
