Ivana Urso is a contemporary Italian artist, born on December 17, 1978, in San Cataldo, in the province of Caltanissetta, Sicily. From a young age, she showed a strong inclination toward applied arts, which led her to attend the Istituto Regionale d’Arte in San Cataldo and later the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania, where she graduated with top honors in Pictorial Decoration.

After completing her studies, she moved to Rome, where she began a personal exploration of thermoformed glass fusion techniques, while continuing to cultivate her passion for pictorial experimentation. In 2017, she joined the art movement known as Pentastrattismo—a group of contemporary Italian artists focused on research and experimentation. Through this movement, Urso expresses and enhances the beauty and gesture of abstract art in a deeply personal way.

Her works are characterized by the use of mixed media on canvas, with relief decorations, resins, watercolors, gauze, handmade papers, gold leaf, metallic pastes, photographic or cardboard cutouts, volcanic ash, and silver leaf. Her art emphasizes the materiality of painting, creating compact and tactile surfaces that break continuity and reflect her insatiable drive to experiment.

More recently, she has expanded her artistic research by focusing on planets and the moon, which serve as sources of inspiration for many of her latest works. In particular, she often uses the circular form, which for her symbolizes the universe and perfection.

Ivana Urso’s artworks have been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including notable exhibitions in Bulgaria and other venues.
