About Harris Varsakis
Harris Varsakis was born in Athens on 28-2-1947 and began drawing from a young age. In his teenage years, he traveled to many Greek islands and earned his pocket money by restoring murals and icons in small Greek churches and monasteries. As a young adult, he came to the Netherlands where he met his wife. He painted in Amsterdam, inspired by the surroundings and the era, creating freely psychedelic paintings. In 1975, he opened a shop on the Greek island of Skiathos, where he then spent every summer, returning to his family in Amsterdam in the autumn. He began to develop a very personal style influenced by Greek iconography, stories from Greek mythology, and inspired by, among others, Hieronymus Bosch, Escher, Dali, and various other artists. His paintings have different depths and many details. At first glance, there is a main theme. Looking closer, this is divided into several small themes built up from tiny details such as countless little eyes, faces, and other shapes.
