Esther van de Steene,  artist based in Amsterdam, was born in Breda in 1975 and graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2003. 

She creates artworks with the aim of enhancing the viewer's life. 

Each piece she makes serves a specific purpose. For example, ‘Wishbird’ helps people stay focused on their goals, while 'A Blue Dot With a Heavy Life' improves one's mindset.

Her work serves as visual reminders for personal reflection, such as paying attention to family or letting go of what you love. 

Her art is rich in symbolism and superstitions, often incorporating elements like robins and swallows, as well as the Nazar—the blue eye amulet traditionally believed to protect against negative influences.

What makes her work unique is her approach. She works in the same way she did as a graphic designer: by seeking the essence of a message, translating it into an image, and simplifying it to its core for maximum impact. 

Her techniques range from watercolor ink to screen printing and enamel, depending on what the concept requires.

For Esther, it’s crucial that every piece she creates adds something meaningful to the viewer's life. 

She draws inspiration from her own daily experiences, often dealing with themes like focus, gratitude, comfort, love, adolescence, and moments of learning.

Animals frequently appear in her work, not for their appearance, but for their deeper symbolic meaning. 

At the academy, she learned that nothing is created simply because it’s 'fun' or 'beautiful,' and she continues to carry that philosophy with her. 

Every piece is designed to help the viewer, offering them something valuable to integrate into their daily life.

Over Esther van de Steene

Esther van de Steene, kunstenaar in Amsterdam is geboren in Breda, 1975 en studeerde in 2003 af aan de Design Academy in eindhoven. 

Ze creëert kunstwerken die als doel hebben het leven van de toeschouwer te verbeteren.

Elk werk dat ze maakt, heeft een specifieke functie.

Zo helpt ‘Wishbird’ mensen hun focus te houden op hun doelen en verbetert ‘Een Blauwe Stip Met Een Zwaar Leven’ je mindset. 

Geheugensteuntjes voor persoonlijke reflectie, zoals aandacht schenken aan familie of het vrijlaten van datgene wat je liefhebt. 

Haar kunst is doordrenkt met symboliek en bijgeloofjes. Ze maakt bijvoorbeeld gebruik van het roodborstje en zwaluwen als symbolische elementen en de Nazar, oftewel de blauwe oogjes, die traditioneel beschermen tegen negatieve invloeden. 

Wat haar werk uniek maakt, is haar aanpak. Ze werkt zoals ze dat voorheen als grafisch ontwerper deed: ze zoekt naar de essentie van een boodschap, vertaalt die naar een beeld en vereenvoudigt het vervolgens tot de kern voor maximale impact.

Haar technieken variëren van ecoline tot zeefdruk en emaille, afhankelijk van wat het concept nodig heeft.

Voor haar is het van groot belang dat elk werk dat ze maakt, iets toevoegt aan het leven van de kijker.

Inspiratie haalt ze uit haar eigen dagelijkse leven, vol confrontaties met thema’s als focus, dankbaarheid, troost, liefde puberteit en leermomenten. 

Dieren spelen vaak een rol in haar werk, niet zozeer om hun uiterlijk, maar vanwege hun diepere, symbolische betekenis.

Ze leerde al op de academie dat niets zomaar gemaakt wordt omdat het 'leuk' of ‘mooi’ is, en die filosofie draagt ze nog altijd met zich mee. 

Elk werk is bedoeld om de kijker te helpen, hen iets waardevols te geven om in hun dagelijks leven te integreren.
