About the work

The pavilion, known as Kwaee, was designed by the Ghanaian-British architect Sir David Adjaye for the architecture biennale in 2023.  The black timber structure adopts a Twi dialect, meaning forest.  “The overall design aims to support conversation and reflection, presenting doorway, platform, assembly and window in a single, unified entity,” said Adjaye.  “By minimizing discontinuity, the all-timber structure cultivates a forest of light and shadow.”

This picture was taken at Arsenale, Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy.
