About Dominic Brown
Mixed Media Artist Dominic Brown is a contemporary artist from the Netherlands. He is known for his groundbreaking use of digital techniques to create his unique artistic output. He produces paintings, murals, and fabric designs. His work can be divided into three main categories: portraits, landscapes, and abstractions. His densely layered compositions are easily recognizable and are full of juxtaposed colors, shapes, and techniques. They appear dynamic and spontaneous, yet are equally balanced and well thought out.
Brown draws his inspiration primarily from ancient civilizations, such as Egypt or Greece, but also Maya, Inca, and African influences can be seen in his work. He focuses his attention on murals, hieroglyphs, symbols, mythology, and architecture of the places he visits. Brown blends these sources into his own unique visual language. This is largely due to his creative process and the way he combines different techniques and materials. It may surprise people that, for an artist who has been influenced by computer technology for most of his career, each new artwork begins with pencil drawing.
After completing his drawings, they are scanned and the digital phase begins as he reworks and perfects his drawings into a colorful composition. When the digital file is ready, Brown prints it on canvas, dibond aluminum, or wood in the highest quality, usually in a limited edition. However, it does not end here. Handwork is now resumed for the artist, as each piece is completed in its own unique way with various materials such as texture gel, colored markers, paint, glitter, and small gold leaves.
Never has the term 'mixed media' been so appropriate. The entire process stems from his belief that art must be innovative and go beyond traditional art practice. It shows that the boundaries between different media indeed blur, and that artists like Brown are at the forefront, guiding others in fulfilling the promise of this new artistic tradition. However, his inspiration is not only fueled by the Egyptian sights he has seen. Early in his life, Dominic was inspired by the rich Turkish culture and Greek mythology. As he grew older, he also developed a fascination for the Maya mysteries and Inca civilizations.
He sees the eccentric masks from Africa as a way to communicate with the past. He believes that the emotion or message that an artist wanted to express hundreds or thousands of years ago could not be conveyed more vividly than through a painting, a drawing, or a symbol. The lines and colors used by the artist evoke a certain emotion in the audience. By using his own lines and colors, Dominic also tries to communicate with people around the world. According to him, something that has no time or language barrier will never be lost.
