About the work
Dimitri Vanderhaeghen (born 1974 in Ghent, lives and works in Brussels) paints a wide variety of subjects in acrylic on canvas in an idiosyncratic, colourful and expressionist way. His colourful landscapes in a fast and driven brushwork testify to an expressive and dynamic method.
The portraits and 'people' have an estranging effect, without being too specific. He gets inspiration from the observation of humans. Man as an imperfect, enigmatic, mysterious, vulnerable, silly, disarming, hypocritical being. But his idols, painters such as Edvard Munch, James Ensor, Asger Jorn, Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, Jean Dubuffet and Vincent Van Gogh also inspire him.
