About Corneille

Corneille (Liège 1922-2010).

With Appel, Constant, Rooskens, and Wolvecamp, Corneille Guillaume van Beverloo was a co-founder of the Dutch Experimental Group (1948), which later that year merged into the CoBrA group. In 1950, Corneille settled in Paris, where he participated in various exhibitions. A year later, he undertook a journey to the Sahara. The deep impression left by his first encounter with the desert was reflected in a series of paintings depicting the earth as a sun-scorched body of sand and stone on which only a few animal and plant species survived. In the following years, Corneille traveled further to South America, the United States, and Central Africa. In his canvases, often landscapes and cities viewed from 'bird’s-eye view', more movement appeared through the enhancement of color contrasts and compact forms.

Corneille art

From the late sixties, Corneille’s work (paintings, gouaches, and drawings) took on a more figurative character, and the large color areas came to the forefront. In a lyrical style, which he would not abandon, the painter narrates what he has seen and experienced, painting visions of tropical landscapes and gardens populated by plants, animals, and women. By now, Corneille had grown into one of the most popular Dutch painters of his time and his work enjoys great international recognition.

On Sunday, September 5, 2010, Corneille passed away at the age of 88 in a hospital in France.
