About Ans Janssen
ANS JANSSEN
(born 1955, Venlo) sculptures, photography, applied art
You don't need to have seen much sculpture by Ans Janssen to discover the African 'touch'. Enthusiasm for this culture has taken root in her sculptures since her many travels through this continent, and that is evident. Africa itself has no tradition of realistic portrait art. However, it has a beautiful (color) rich array of masks in which, according to cultural tradition, much symbolism and mythology is incorporated. This makes Ans's figurative sculpture unique. She does not seek pure anatomical imitation but tries to convey the feeling and expression that touch her in her encounters with people. Recognizable cultural expressions, shaped in hairstyles, facial paintings, tattoos, jewelry, etc., and ordinary daily observations form an inexhaustible source of inspiration. The work must live, breathe, move.
In addition to her sculptures, she paints and photographs and designs functional objects in public spaces.
