About Amélia Sampaio
Amélia Sampaio. A visual artist, Amélia Sampaio was born in 1973 and grew up in the working-class suburbs of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). She now lives in Santa Teresa (Rio de Janeiro) and Avignon (France).
Her work as an artist is nourished by her personal experiences. A poor (but happy) childhood, her work as a teacher in schools located in favelas and prisons, the daily racism that people of colour and Indians have to face in Brazil, and the machismo of a Brazilian society that was built up at the time of colonisation and slavery suggest to her, almost compel her, to create work in which the social dimension is omnipresent.
