Over Gallery Varsakis

Harris Varsakis is the painter of this amazing collection of paintings that depict Greek mythology in a surrealistic way. He was born on 28-2-1947 in Athens, Greece, and was drawing as soon as he could hold a pen. As a teenager he started painting and traveled a lot in Greece, providing for his trips by restoring murals in old churches and monasteries.  He briefly studied at the Art Academy of Athens, but didn't feel he belonged there and moved to Amsterdam in 1968.  He became member of the BBK (Bond van beeldende kunstenaars) of Amsterdam. Harris was an autodidact who intuitively developed his unique characteristic style.
In 1975 he opened his gallery in Skiathos, where his paintings can be seen today. He has seldomly ever sold a painting as he was too connected with them to let go of one of them. Beautiful reproductions in canvas have been made that are sold in Gallery Varsakis.  He was not a big fan of exhibitions and participated only in a few:

In Galerie Stromboli in Athens

Twice in the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hague

In the summer he would be in his gallery, which was also an antique and jewelry shop. In the winter he would return to Amsterdam and paint.

Harris passed on 19-7-2019 and his gallery is being continued by his daughter, wife and grand daugthers.
