Johan van der Veer: Earth and Solitude

8 August 2026

Johan van der Veer has spent his life looking closely—43 years as an object photographer at Museum Het Princessehof in Leeuwarden shaped his eye for detail and stillness. Now based in IJlst, van der Veer works in paint, creating minimalist compositions in warm earth tones and ochre that feel both intimate and contemplative. His paintings carry a quiet melancholy, whether exploring empty landscapes, solitary figures, or the simple geometry of objects and interiors. There's a sense of solitude running through his work, paired with an honest attention to how light and texture make a place feel real. The Fries Museum and Princessehof have collected his paintings, and his work has shown across the Netherlands. Van der Veer continues to paint from his home in the north, turning observation into something that lingers.
