Annejole Jacobs-de Jongh: Portraits with Layers

Annejole Jacobs-de Jongh has been creating mixed-media portraits since 2003, building each piece from carefully composed layers of digital images, texts, and scanned materials drawn from art, history, music, and literature. Working from photographs and digital sources, she paints her subjects onto canvas backgrounds that tell their own visual stories. Her commissions range from private individuals to companies, but she also pursues personal work that often centers on women—from classic and famous figures to ordinary people around the world. She has also explored intimate portraits of couples. Each painting becomes a portrait with depth, where the subject exists within a rich context of cultural and personal meaning.
