Art fairs & biennials

A few days a year, the whole art world gathers in one hall — hundreds of galleries, thousands of works, and everything for sale in plain sight. Fairs are the fastest way to see a lot of art at once, and nobody minds if you only come to look.

Going to a fair for the first time?

Go on a weekday if you can, wear comfortable shoes, and do one lap without stopping to get a feel for the whole floor. Prices are usually on request — asking is completely normal and nobody expects you to buy. Many fairs have a section for younger galleries where works are far more affordable than the big names up front.
