Over het werk
Although this piece was made during the coronavirus lockdown, it refers to the more universal condition of the individual and his/her relationship with the world. In the drawing an old man sits apparently bed-bound whilst a young man excitedly tells him about his adventures in the wider world. Much of this refers to sex, but the whole of life appears to revolve around the sea. The sea as a symbol of life and consciousness - conscious life above, unconscious life below. The individual's experience of life, when fully lived, both conscious and unconscious, is oceanic. At the old man's back is a wardrobe - empty and black - is this a symbol of his impending death and the Great Unknown?
