Fierljeppen
Over het werk
Original painting for sale from the artist himself.
The title refers to the Frisian national sport of “Fierljeppen” (literal translation "Far jumping"), where competitors aim to jump across a canal by means of a pole. Whoever lands the furthest wins. But sometime things don't work out as hoped and the competitors end up inn the middle of the canal.
The work is part of an expanding series “Friesland”, where all titles refer to traditions, events and monuments in the Dutch province of Friesland. This province has it's own characteristics (a.o. it's own official language) and it's own traditions.
Jan's roots lie in Friesland as 3 of his grandparents were of 100% Frisian blood. He has always been attracted to the province and he does have a new connection, being in a relationship with a lady born and raised in Drachten.
More work in this series can be found on the artist's website Http://www.jgr-art.nl in the Gallery “Friesland”, other work is also available there. (Sorry, the text on the website is primarily in Dutch, but the pictures speak a universal language).
