Over het werk

Original painting for sale from the artist himself.

A scene depicting the Bonkefeart in Leeuwarden, Friesland, the finish location of the Alvestêdetocht (Eleven Cities Race).
The Alvestêdetocht is an ice skating race over appr. 200 km. It's name comes from the fact the riders pass eleven cities in the province of Fryslân (dutch: Friesland), all of them connected by waterways and lakes. Starting in Ljouwert (Leeuwarden) they pass Snits (Sneek), Drylts (IJlst), Sleat (Sloten), Starum (Stavoren), Hylpen (Hindeloopen), Warkum (Workum), Boalsert (Bolsward), Harns (Harlingen), Frentsjer (Franeker), Dokkum and back to Ljouwert. After finishing, those riders that get their participation-card stamped in every city and reached the finishline in time, receive a medal in the form of a cross, the so called Alvestêde-krúskje.

At the finishline a monument has been placed, a bow over the Bonkefeart shaped like the medal.

The work is part of an expanding series “Friesland”, where all titles refer to traditions, events and monuments in the Dutch province of Friesland. This province has it's own characteristics (a.o. it's own official language) and it's own traditions.

Jan's roots lie in Friesland as 3 of his grandparents were of 100% Frisian blood. He has always been attracted to the province and he does have a new connection, being in a relationship with a lady born and raised in Drachten.

More work in this series can be found on the artist's website http://www.jgr-art.nl in the Galery “Friesland”, other work is also available there. (Sorry, the text on the website is primarily in Dutch, but the pictures speak a universal language).
