Luitspeler

The musician is actually playing an Oud, the king of instruments and known in the West as the lute. This work explores the meditative state of the musician. In the background, a globe symbolizes the physical world, and a keffiyeh draped over a railing refers to the conflict between Palestine and Israel, as well as symbolizing the tragedy of all conflicts. In his radiant robe, the Oud player hovers above this; is he escaping into his music? Or is he using his instrument to transcend worldly suffering?

De muzikant bespeelt eigenlijk een Ud, de koning der instrumenten en in het westen bekend als de luit. Dit werk gaat over de meditatieve staat van zijn van de muzikant. Op de achtergrond staat een wereldbol die verwijst naar de fysieke wereld en over de leuning ligt een kuffiyeh als verwijzing naar het conflict tussen Palestina en Israel maar ook als symbool voor de tragiek van alle conflicten. In zijn stralende gewaad zweeft de Udspeler hierboven; vlucht hij weg in zijn muziek? Of gebruikt hij zijn instrument om het wereldse leed te oversijgen?
