Les filaments de l’agonie
Over het werk
Some time ago, I took the liberty of studying cotton and barbed wire. Between the 15th and 19th centuries, in the Americas, cotton was grown on plantations (a colonial system of exploitation based on slavery and monoculture on large estates for export to the metropolis). So cotton is a reminder of my ancestors and the suffering they endured to make their masters rich.
Barbed wire was originally created in the United States to keep cattle in the pastures. It was used to develop livestock farming and also to enrich its owners. It has also been used in trenches during wars, on walls to reinforce security, in concentration camps and today in refugee camps.
Throughout their history, these materials have caused both pain and security.
The series of sculptures entitled "The filament of agony" was born, I believe, out of this perception that the world imposes extreme and cutting conditions on anyone who is different from what is conventional in today's society.
