Buenos Aires: Malba turns 25 and swallows a legendary collection
Malba, the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, turns twenty-five on 21 September 2026 — and it is marking the occasion in the most consequential way a museum can: by growing.
In December, founder Eduardo F. Costantini acquired the Daros Latinamerica Collection, assembled in Zurich over decades and widely regarded as one of the most important collections of Latin American art in existence. It joins a museum that began as one man's private collection and became the reference point for modern and contemporary art of the region.
The anniversary year opened with Olga de Amaral. Cuerpo Textil, a retrospective of the Colombian artist whose woven, gold-leafed surfaces sit somewhere between painting, sculpture and cloth. In March came Fernanda Laguna — Mi corazón es un imán (1992–2025), the fullest survey yet of an artist who has shaped Argentine art as painter, poet, gallerist and organiser in equal measure.
On 30 April, a thousand visitors turned up for the opening of LATINOAMÉRICA EN EXPANSIÓN, the new presentation of the Malba—Costantini collection. Eleven works by Latin American artists entered the collection last November, among them a major painting by the Brazilian artist Teresinha Soares and works by Luis Ouvrard, María Martorell and Dalila Puzzovio.
There is change at the top as well: Rodrigo Moura concluded his term as Artistic Director in January.
A gala on 17 September will mark the anniversary proper, days before the museum's actual birthday.
