Sending from your own address in Gmail

Keep the inbox you already use and send from your own domain. The route most artists take.

You keep the inbox you already use. Nothing moves, nothing gets reorganised. The only thing that changes is the name on the envelope: your mail goes out as you@yourdomain.com instead of your personal address.

Before you start, you need two things from us: your address and its password. If you do not have them yet, ask us and we send them the same day.

Add the address to Gmail

  1. Open Gmail on a computer. This cannot be done in the phone app.
  2. Click the gear icon in the top right and choose See all settings.
  3. Go to the tab Accounts and Import.
  4. Next to *Send mail as*, click Add another email address.
  5. Fill in your name as you want people to see it, and your new address. Leave *Treat as an alias* ticked.
  6. Click Next Step.

The one screen that matters

Gmail now asks how the mail should be sent. It offers to send through its own servers. Do not pick that. Choose sending through SMTP and fill in:

  • SMTP Server: smtp.migadu.com
  • Port: 465
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: the password we sent you
  • Secured connection using SSL

Click Add Account.

Confirm and you are done

  1. We send a confirmation code to your new address. It arrives in the same inbox, usually within a minute.
  2. Paste the code in the window Gmail opened, or click the link in the message.
  3. Back in *Accounts and Import*, choose whether you want this address to be the default sender. If most of your art mail goes out from it, set it as default.

From now on there is a From line above every message you write, where you can pick which address to send from. Gmail also replies from the address a message was sent to, so answering someone who wrote to your own address happens under that address automatically.

Checking it worked

Send a message to a friend on a different provider and ask them what the sender says. If it shows your own domain and it landed in the inbox rather than in spam, everything is set up correctly.

If it did land in spam, the SMTP step above is almost always the reason. Go back to *Accounts and Import*, remove the address and add it again, this time choosing SMTP.

Still stuck?

Write to us and a person answers, usually the same day.
