Sharing work-in-progress: the content that always works

The single most reliable thing an artist can share is the unfinished thing on the easel right now.

Why unfinished work performs

Finished work invites judgement; unfinished work invites curiosity. People want to know how it will end, and they come back to find out.

It also makes the price make sense. Once someone has watched a painting take three weeks, €900 stops sounding like a lot.

Four things worth photographing

The blank surface with the first marks. The ugly middle stage every artist knows. A detail of texture in raking light. Your hands or tools in the frame.

The ugly middle stage is consistently the most popular. It is reassuring, and it is honest.

💡 Shoot in the same corner with the same light every time. Your feed gains a recognisable rhythm without any planning.

Do not narrate every step

A series of twelve near-identical progress shots wears people out. Three or four moments across a piece is plenty: beginning, turning point, finish.

Leave room for the work to arrive as a small surprise.

Turn the finish into an event

When a piece is done, say so clearly and show it properly photographed. If it is for sale, that is the natural moment to mention it — people who followed the process feel invested.

That is also the best moment to e-mail your list: "the one you saw me struggling with is finished".

Kort fortalt

Three or four honest moments per work, always including the ugly middle, shot in the same light, finishing with a proper reveal.
