From visitor to collector: e-mail beats algorithms

A social post reaches a fraction of your followers. An e-mail reaches everyone who asked to hear from you.

The list is the only audience you own

Followers are borrowed; e-mail addresses are yours. If every platform disappeared tomorrow, your list would still be there — and it converts many times better than any feed.

Five hundred engaged readers is a serious career. It does not need to be bigger than that.

Ask in the right place, with the right promise

A sign-up box on your website, at the bottom of your artwork pages, and on a card in every parcel you ship. Be specific about what people get: "new work first, about six e-mails a year" beats "subscribe to my newsletter".

Never add people who did not ask. It damages trust and, in Europe, breaks the law.

💡 The best moment to ask is right after someone has spent time looking. Put the sign-up under the work, not in a popup that interrupts it.

What to actually write

One new work with the story behind it. A photograph of the studio in the middle of a piece. A short note about what you are struggling with. People subscribe to a person, not to a catalogue.

Four to eight e-mails a year is plenty. Consistency matters more than frequency.

Give first buyers a reason to come back

Send collectors a note when a series they own grows, or a first look before a new group goes public. That single habit turns one-time buyers into people who buy again.

The second sale is nearly always easier than the first — but only if you stay in touch.

In het kort

Own your list, ask clearly and honestly, write like a person a handful of times a year, and give existing collectors first look.
