Ricardo Reis

Ricardo Reis began photographing as a young person in Portugal, finding in the medium a way to express a unique perspective on the world. He works primarily in black and white 35mm film, preferring what he sees as its directness and honesty. He shoots with a Canon EOS 1 RS film camera, valuing the mental preparation required to translate ideas into final images.

Reis started his career as an intern at a Portuguese daily newspaper, and his work was subsequently published in several major newspapers and magazines. He went on to work in fashion photography, covering fashion weeks across Europe, though he found himself drawn more to the freedom and creative risks possible in backstage work. He has worked as a cinematographer and director for album and DVD covers, collaborating with photography agencies in Portugal and the UK.

Music photography and music videos form a significant part of his practice. His more artistic work is held in private collections across Canada, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Australia, China, Portugal, and the United States. Reis currently lives in Lisbon.
