On November 11, 2007, during a storm, several ships sank in the Black Sea. 15 crew members died. One ship, the Volganeft 139, lost 10,000 tons of fuel oil in the days following the storm. It is estimated that 30,000 birds (many of which are endangered) died as a result of the oil disaster. 50 km of Russian coastline has been stained with oil for a long time.
