Wil Adolfs was born on 16 July 1948 in Amsterdam. He studied Fashion Design at HKU (formerly Academy of Fine Arts / Artibus) in Utrecht from 1965 to 1970, and went on to study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, earning a certificate from NXI in 1969–1971 and completing the Textile Design department in 1971–1974. He also obtained a DETEX diploma in textile knowledge in 1973 and a pedagogical certificate for vocational education in 1974.

Adolfs taught design at Amsterdam Fashion Academy from 1971 to 1974 and lectured at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy's teacher training department from 1973 to 1977. From 1974 to 2004, he was a lecturer in fashion at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, where he also served as coordinator of the Fashion department from 1988 to 2004 and coordinator of Fashion and Interior from 2000 to 2002. He later lectured at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, supervising internships and coaching careers in the Communication & Multimedia design program from 2004 to 2012, and served as an external expert there from 2012 to 2023.

Beyond teaching, Adolfs worked as a freelance pattern designer, designed knitwear collections for Forza fashion, and created designs for Esprit accessories in 1993–1994 and 1997. He also provided forecasting and design work for various retail and lifestyle companies including Veritas in Belgium, Treffina, and Nio Lifestyle in Bali, Indonesia. He traveled to South America in 1976–1977 and to Asia in 1994–1995. Adolfs served on the board of the Professional Association of Dutch Designers from 1997 to 2000 and on the committee of the Design Fund for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture from 2001 to 2004. Since 2013, he has been a member of the Advisory Board at Academy Artemis University of Applied Sciences for styling and design.
