About Serghei Ghetiu
Klaipėda, Lithuania
Serghei Ghetiu was born on January 1, 1976, in Soroca, Moldova. He showed an early interest in drawing and modeling clay, with his first exhibitions taking place in his nursery and at the local house of culture. He graduated from art school in 1991 at age 15, but remained at home rather than pursue studies in Chisinau. That same year, his father passed away, creating financial strain for the family. During his subsequent military service, Ghetiu was recognized for his artistic talent and became a regimental artist.
After his military service, Ghetiu declined a permanent graphic design position in Chisinau, concerned it would restrict his creative freedom. At 21, he entered the College of Fine Arts "Alexandru Plămădeală" in Chisinau, but financial difficulties forced him to leave after six months. He worked while painting as a hobby, and at 26 returned to formal education to study linguistics and German philology. He earned a scholarship to study in Germany and graduated with a degree in German Philology and Communication, continuing to paint and sell works during this period.
Ghetiu moved to Lithuania with his wife, where he has lived since. He has worked as a full-time artist, and his paintings are held in private collections worldwide, particularly in the United States. His work is featured in galleries in Vilnius and Kaunas. He paints a range of subjects including people, nature, and still lifes, and describes his work as driven by emotion and a love of detail.
