About Peter Smit
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Peter Smit was born in Amsterdam in 1957 and works as a painter in the impressionist tradition. He creates beach scenes, city scenes, portraits, and figure paintings, working primarily with oil paint and focusing on color and light rather than line. He paints wet-on-wet without preliminary sketches, building his compositions from color spots and areas that create an almost lost atmosphere.
Smit prefers to paint outdoors and from life, whether capturing bathers on the beach in their most characteristic moments or working with models and portrait subjects in the studio. He works directly from what appears before him, seeking outside influences and inspiration from the people and places around him. His approach aims to show people from within, revealing something essential in his portraits and figure work.
