Gabriël Gressie (1959): “I have known since I was young that I wanted to be a painter. I think I would not have been suitable for anything else, simply because I am always busy with art in my head. A simple word or event is immediately transformed in my mind into a visual story. I can perhaps best describe my paintings as painted stories.
So, as soon as I sit in my studio, there is a great commotion in my head: all sorts of animals pop up, often literally, and suddenly squeak up between the toys and other objects. They can make quite a mess, secretly nibbling at the carefully painted fruit, and often play pranks. Sometimes I find myself quite busy with them. But thanks to these little rascals, my existence as a painter has never been boring, and they have helped me over many years in creating many paintings.
