Jan Hendrikse

Jan Henderikse has exhibited extensively across nearly every continent, though he remains and embraces an outsider position in the art world. For him, art is everything, and his practice centers on everyday objects he finds and collects—beer crates, coins, discarded supermarket posters, plastic Jesuses—which he exhibits in large quantities. He also creates work through other means: he photographed all corners of Broadway, the longest street in New York, and commissioned a bronze cast of a grenade hole from a World War II-damaged Berlin bridge.

Henderikse works in the tradition of the readymade, considering something art if he has designated it as such and signed it. A German newspaper called him "der Grossvater des Trash" (the grandfather of trash) in 1998 following a large exhibition in Potsdam.
