Ceciel Hattinga

Ceciel Hattinga works with color on paper as a fundamental practice. The starting point for each work comes from observations of everyday life—interesting spots on sidewalks, newspaper photographs, and inner images. The focus remains on the painting process itself, and the final result is never predetermined. While painting and making collages, Hattinga moves quickly between letting go of control and directing the work, responding to the fast-drying acrylic paint. This approach usually yields abstract, colorful images that function as snapshots, which is why the works typically remain untitled.

The practice incorporates various materials and techniques. Chalk and sand are sometimes worked through the acrylic paint, and collages include used paper and wax paper. Recently, Hattinga has begun making miniatures, often in the form of booklets, constructed from leftover studio materials, acrylic paint, and objects found on the street.
