Artis Bute was born on March 30, 1958, in Riga, Latvia. He studied at the Janis Rozentals Riga Secondary Art School from 1970 to 1977, and then at the State Academy of Art from 1977 to 1984, where he graduated as a stage designer.
Throughout his career, Bute has worked in painting, stage design, exhibition design, posters, and monumental painting. His stage design work earned him the Theatre Show Prize in the Republic in 1987 for his sets for A. Chekhov's "The Seagull" at the State Liepaja Theatre, and the Baltic Theatre Show prize in 1988 for the same production. His work has been exhibited widely across Europe and Australia, including personal shows in Tukums, Valmiera, Stockholm, Berlin, and Vilnius, as well as group exhibitions in Canberra, Salzburg, Bradford, and other cities. He has designed sets for numerous theatre productions, primarily at the State Liepaja Theatre and State Drama Theatre, and has created wall paintings and exhibition designs throughout Latvia.
