About Art of the blue studio
Rotterdam, Netherlands
Maria Selkou was born in Athens, Greece, where the intense blue tones of summer holidays by the sea left a lasting impression. When she moved to the Netherlands in 2010, she discovered different blue tones in dramatic skies and Delft blue ceramics, finding a connection between these two cultures through the color cyan.
Selkou studied architecture in both Greece and the Netherlands, developing a keen sensitivity to the urban environment and the relationships between buildings, light, and shadow. She currently lives and works in the Netherlands as an architect.
Her interests in photography and art converge in cyanotype, a technique she uses to create handmade artworks on paper and textile. Drawing on places she has visited or lived in, Selkou combines the analogue cyanotype process with digital photography, exploring the dynamic relationship between artistic and realistic photographic representation.
