Al Varo

Al Varo is a visual artist born in Angola who moved to Portugal at age eight. Since the age of twenty, he has dedicated himself full-time to painting, working with any materials and mediums available to him.

His work seeks freedom in the creative act, pursuing an expression that is raw and free while also tender and meticulous. Though his painting might be categorized as outsider or Brute art, he resists such labels, finding instead that freedom allows his work to emerge, assert itself, and reflect while engaging with the external world.

In Varo's painting, there are no comfort zones.
