Collaborations with other artists: 1 + 1 = 3

Other artists are not your competition. They are the fastest route to an audience that already likes art.

Share an audience instead of chasing one

A joint exhibition with two or three artists doubles or triples the people who come through the door, and every visitor arrives already interested in buying art.

Choose artists whose work sits well next to yours without looking like yours. Contrast makes a stronger show than similarity.

Agree the boring things first

Costs, space, hanging, promotion, who handles sales, and what happens if one person sells everything and another sells nothing. Ten minutes of honesty at the start prevents a lost friendship at the end.

Put it in a short e-mail so everyone has the same version.

💡 Split promotion by audience rather than by task: each artist personally invites their own list. That is where the visitors actually come from.

Smaller collaborations count too

A shared newsletter feature, a studio swap for a week, a joint workshop, a conversation posted as an interview. All of them introduce you to a warm audience without needing a venue.

Featuring another artist generously is almost always returned.

Find your handful of peers

Most artists who sustain a career have a small group of colleagues they show work to, complain to and plan with. It is not networking; it is not being alone with it.

Start by being genuinely useful to two or three people whose work you admire.

In short

Show together with artists whose work contrasts with yours, agree the practical terms in writing, promote through each other’s audiences, and build a small circle of peers.
