Ernst Pardoen: Stories in Wood
Ernst Pardoen transforms forgotten farmhouse doors and shutters into intimate portraits and surreal scenes. Working on wood that carries its own weathered past—cracks, hinges, and iron fittings intact—he creates layered paintings where the material itself becomes part of the story. Born in New Guinea and now based in the rural Dutch village of Haaksbergen, Pardoen's work sits somewhere between expressionism and dream logic, often haunting and introspective, sometimes touched with gold leaf and mystery. The texture beneath his brushwork isn't decoration; it's a conversation between what the wood remembers and what the artist imagines.
