He could often be found on the quay by the Waalhaven and the Maashaven, painting the Rotterdam port in all its facets in his own impressionistic way. Besides some lessons from Willem Maris, he was mainly self-taught. He painted numerous beautiful harbors (but also flower still lifes and landscapes and, for example, cityscapes of Paris). Later in life, he had problems with alcohol. As a result, his later paintings became messier and of lower quality. He lived in London, Paris, Germany, and then Rotterdam, Voorburg, and The Hague.
