São Paulo, Brazil

Pinacoteca de São Paulo

Brazil's oldest art museum, gutted and rebuilt by Paulo Mendes da Rocha.

The 1900 building was stripped to its brick and roofed in glass, creating light-filled halls for Brazilian art from the nineteenth century to now. Next door, a former prison houses a memorial to resistance.
