Handling discount requests without losing value

"Is that your best price?" is not an insult. It is a question — and there is a way to answer it that keeps both the sale and your dignity.

Understand what is really being asked

Most people asking for a discount are not trying to devalue your work. They are testing whether the price is real, or they genuinely cannot stretch that far this month. Those two need different answers.

Ask one friendly question before you respond: "which piece are you looking at, and were you hoping to hang it soon?" The answer tells you which situation you are in.

Give something, not away

Free shipping, free framing, a small work on paper included, or payment in three monthly instalments. All of these feel generous and none of them lower the value of the work in the market.

Instalments in particular close more sales than discounts do, especially in the €800 to €3000 range.

💡 A short, warm sentence works better than an explanation: "I keep my prices the same everywhere, but I would be glad to include shipping and framing for you."

When a discount is fine

For a returning collector, for someone buying two or three works at once, or for a museum or public collection where the placement genuinely matters. Then it is a decision, not a concession.

Keep it modest — ten to fifteen percent — and mention the reason, so it is clearly an exception rather than your new price.

Never apologise for your price

You do not have to defend it, justify the hours or explain the materials. "That is my price, and I am happy to explain how I arrive at it" is a complete answer.

Confidence is part of what people buy. An artist who defends their price nervously teaches the buyer that the price is negotiable.

In het kort

Ask what is behind the question, offer extras or instalments instead of a lower price, keep exceptions rare and explained, and never apologise.
